About Wolfard Oil Lamps

The Wolfard lamp has been hand blown from the finest heat-resistant glasses available. The lamp has no moving parts, and is rugged enough to be cleaned in the dishwasher. With reasonable care it should eventually become a family heirloom. Durable as the lamp is, however, it is made of glass and so is not indestructible.

A filler spout is supplied to facilitate filling the fuel globe. The spout is designed to fit most one-quart lamp oil bottles. Wolfard Lamp Oil is recommended because of its clean burning qualities.
Kerosene and other inexpensive lamp oils should be avoided, because they tend to smoke and have a relatively strong odor. Solvents or fuels with lower ignition points than kerosene, such as alcohol, gasoline, paint thinner or acetone, are unsafe and should not be used.

The most convenient way to light the lamp is with a long-tip butane fireplace lighter, a long fireplace match, or with a long piece of uncooked spaghetti. Avoid tilting the lamp to light it, because this could spill fuel.

The properly adjusted flame is approximately the size and intensity of a candle. The flame size is adjusted by raising and lowering the wick in its holder. Be careful not to let any part of the wick, including threads or frays, protrude from the top of the holder, or the lamp may smoke. During initial use, or when sampling different oil, watch the lamp for the first few minutes to be sure the wick is set low enough to avoid smoking. To lower the flame, blow out the lamp, allow to cool, remove the wick holder from the lamp and pull the wick further down into the holder.

The Wolfard Oil Lamps are designed to burn for many hours without refilling. The following table shows fuel capacity and burning time. Since each lamp is hand blown and may vary slightly, the figures are approximate.
